Three local restaurants feature in AA Hospitality’s “The Restaurant Guide 2020”;  The Gallivant in Camber, the Mermaid Inn and Webbe’s at The Fish Cafe in Rye.

The guide in its 27th edition features 2,000 of Britain’s best restaurants, but East Sussex does not feature among those counties or cities with the most new additions. Devon, Cornwall, Norfolk and North Yorkshire do though so eating in or around coastal resorts is clearly thriving.

The AA’s professional inspectors have awarded all the featured restaurants with rosettes for culinary excellence and the Sussex list includes eleven in Brighton, two in Eastbourne, but apparently none in Hastings – though Uckfield has three and Battle one (the Powder Mills Hotel) – and Westfield has one too, the Wild Mushroom restaurant.

  1. I will be visiting Rye in September next and cannot wait to sample the local cuisine! As I’m staying at the Mermaid, the dining room will be only a step away.
