Here’s a roundup of some of the other stories making the news in Rye this week.
Support for local businesses
The Rother Rural Business Grant Programme launched last week, with up to £50,000 available to firms. Local businesses can apply for grants totalling 50% of the cost of capital projects from £2500 and above. Proposals that could receive the funding include: farm diversification projects outside of agriculture, property adaptations, creation and expansion of rural leisure and tourism businesses, new equipment, machinery and commercial vehicles.
The programme is funded by the UK Government as part of the Rural Prosperity Fund through allocations received by Rother District Council and Wealden District Council. It is being delivered by East Sussex County Council, with applications accepted throughout the year until the available funds are used up. Further details here.
More travel problems
One of the main roads into Rye will be closed overnight next week. The A259 will be shut between the Monk Bretton Bridge over the River Rother and the Camber Road junction between Monday January 22 and Friday January 26 from 9pm until 6am.
The work is part of National Highways plan to improve the road across the Romney Marsh between Rye and Brenzett.
Meanwhile more rail strikes have been announced. Southern and Southeastern will both be affected on Tuesday, January 30 when members of the ASLEF rail union walk out for 24 hours.
Camber jobs
Whilst Pontins at Camber is closed following the announcement in December, nearby Parkdean Resorts is holding several recruitment days to find new staff. The Camber Sands Holiday Park on Lydd Road is looking for cleaners, chefs, waiting and bar staff, as well as lifeguards, shop assistants and administrators.
The first open day is Tuesday, January 23 11am-8pm, with another one the following Saturday, January 27 10am-6pm, with more dates in February. More details here.
Rubbish bin confusion
It’s never easy remembering which days the rubbish is being collected over Christmas and new year, but this year it was more complicated. Rother District Council sent out the wrong dates to a number of residents because of a technical error, for which it has since apologised. The council has confirmed collection days are now back to normal.
Advice & support
Next week, January 22-28, is Cervical Cancer Awareness Week. It’s a time to highlight those living with the illness, and to help future generations of women to avoid it. More details here, including help and advice if you’re concerned about symptoms and when to contact your GP.
Something for the weekend
On Saturday, January 20 there’s another Tilling, Tea and Cake at the Tilling Green Community Centre. The “Saturday social for everyone” is organized by FAiR, Friends Altogether in Rother, and takes place 10am-noon. The charity is also looking for volunteers.
This Sunday, January 21 it’s the Brewery Yard Club’s final yard sale. The venue, which closed at the end of last year, is selling furniture, glassware, entertainment and catering equipment, as well as decorations, lamps and mirrors. The sale takes place 10am-2pm at the club on Landgate in Rye.
