Our foodbank’s Christmas

All the tables were heaving, dozens of food parcels packed ready and the stores cupboard bursting with donated goods as Rye Foodbank opened the doors to clients on December 21.

The stock room was full, there were so many extra festive goods kindly donated by this wonderfully generous community –  it crossed our minds we would be in trouble if it didn’t all get taken away as we have so little storage space. There was no need to worry though, we served 210 adults and children that day and everything was cleared in the three hours we were open.

The Hawkhurst charity Hands of Hope kindly brought turkeys, and those with a suitable kitchen, cooker and utensils were able to take a large turkey home for their Christmas dinner.

Our clients enjoyed massive and generous Christmas donations from Pett WI, Iden Stores, Rye College, Rye and District Rotary, Jempson’s, and many many others. Some Rye business such as RX Architects had held a raffle, others had organised quiz events and carol concerts to be able to donate to Rye Foodbank.

We can’t mention everyone who has donated to us, needless to say massive thanks to so many who donated goods, their winter fuel payment, and made special efforts to raise funds and to help with deliveries, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and can give every assurance that every single item was greatly appreciated.

There were so many smiles, and even some tears from those who have to go without when they were given extra supplies for Christmas. None of it would be possible without the generosity of those who realise supporting the less fortunate in the community they live is one of the best things to do at this time.

Demand on Rye Foodbank has doubled in recent months and we have extended our opening hours to cope. We are now open from midday until 3pm every Wednesday.

During what is likely to be the most challenging winter our food bank has ever faced, please continue to help make sure we can be there for everyone who needs us.

Everyone who needs help is welcome to come to the Baptist Hall in Cinque Ports Street on Wednesdays from noon until 3pm. As well as emergency food supplies we can provide a listening ear and we have a resident benefits advisor. If you or anyone you know are worried please contact us at ryefoodbank@gmail.com or 07526 349847.

If you would like to donate funds our sort code is 20-54-25, and our account number 83501116.
