It may have been raining for much of the day on Sunday, but Tilling Green just got on with enjoying their Summer Fete – raising funds for the Residents Association and the Ferry Road Nursery as well as a variety of other organisations who had stalls, writes Dan Lake. The band (the Rhythm Doctors) played, the children danced (from the Rye Dance Centre and Splitz), the Mayor, Cllr Bernardine Fiddemore, along with Town Crier Rex Swain opened the proceedings, and who cared about the rain. The bouncy castle came indoors and was erected in a classroom. The reptiles (from RepTylers) came indoors too and the people went outdoors – under canvas – for a pint and the BBQ. Pony and donkey rides were a washout, but little else was – and the rain, and the fete, showed that Tilling Green needs a community centre and hall of this size – to accommodate the line dancers, the stalls and stallholders, the games, the tombolas – and, indeed – the snacks.
