The organisers of this year’s Rye Pirates and Smugglers Day hit the town on Saturday 4 July, in a publicity push for next month’s event. It was a chance to raise awareness of what will be happening on 8 August, with a full schedule about to be published.
“It was a really good day,” said Rye Pirates and Smugglers Day organiser, Zoe Britton. “The reaction was amazing. People stopped us for photographs as we toured the town talking to shopkeepers asking them to put up posters. There was a lot of curiosity from tourists who loved what we were up to.”

Grabbing a selfie with pirate Peg Leg Pete was very popular she said. “A real pirate in a great costume. He had his parrot with him though most people didn’t realise Mango was real!”
As well as touring the town, the crew from Rye Pirates and Smugglers Day also held a public meeting at the River Haven Hotel.
“We’ve had lots of support,” said Zoe. “There’s still some space for stall holders and we’d love to talk to any potential sponsors too.”

Rye Pirates and Smugglers Day in 2025 saw hundreds of people touring the town in full costume. Like last year, this year’s event is free with a focus on making the day as child-friendly as possible.
