Rye 1sts invested in the long trip to Cuckfield, leaving at 10am, and returning at 10pm.
Cuckfield is a lovely, picturesque ground, on which Cuckfield batted first on another hot day. Rye rued missed chances as Dominic Sear scored 111 off just 129 balls. He was supported by Max Webb 36. The lightning fast outfield aided the batters as they amassed 256-7 off 45 overs. Craig Pierce 2-47 and Harry Smeed 2-49 the pick of the Rye bowlers.
Rye’s response never really got into gear. Cornel Swart 63 and Harry Smeed 33, with a wagging tail of Craig Pierce 26, saw Rye to 208-9 off 45 overs to lose by 48 runs. Dominic Sear with 3-45 completed an MOM performance. This Saturday Rye 1sts are on the road again, this time to table topping Glynde, with Rye in 3rd place.
The 2nds hosted Newhaven 1sts at the Rye Cricket Salts in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn. Newhaven won the toss and batted first. They went off quickly with 44 off just 6 overs, but 2 wickets from James Archer 2- 25 pegged back Newhaven, then excellent disciplined bowling and catch saw Rye chip away at Newhaven as they slipped to 102-7. Ross Pierce 3-26 and Ben Clifton 2-34. Then an extraordinary innings from Nathan Vithey who hit 4 enormous sixes, but Riley McCarthy 2-6 wrapped up the innings on 149 all out.
Rye 2nds Achilles heel all year has been batting. It threatened to strike again on Saturday. Players scored quickly, got started then got out. This time Jack Barras rescued the innings with a knock of 55 not out off 71 balls. There was a flurry of wickets but James Archer batting at 10 provided the perfect foil as they 26 runs for the 9th wicket to see Rye home by 2 wickets.
This Saturday Rye host Eastbourne 3rds in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn. The 3rds host Westfield 2nds at Icklesham.

Last Sunday saw the culmination of eight weeks of All Stars Cricket at Rye Cricket Club. Twenty 5-8 year olds took part, enjoying learning the skills of batting, bowling and fielding with a softball. This is the first steps into the game of cricket. Two of our young people enjoyed their first taste of hardball cricket from this group. A pathway to the game of cricket.
