Dont rain on my parade

In the morning it looked like the umbrellas in the Hastings Fat Tuesday parade might come in handy as rain lashed down on people making their way to the Old Town for the annual Mardi Gras celebrations last Sunday February 9.

Undaunted, spectators from Rye had braved that worst of all transport disasters, the rail replacement bus service, to get to our sister town in order to join in the good times. By the time performers had massed in Chess Square, the strong winds had blown away the clouds leaving radiant sunshine and bright smiles.

The parade was led by the inimitable and indescribable Fat Tuesday 2nd Line Band, whom Rye welcomes with open arms and mouths during our own jazz festival. The procession marched through the centre of town, accompanied by a host of characters, many with decorated umbrellas and bizarre costumes. Spectators walked along with them and we all ended up at the old Observer building where there was free music, food and drink and a chilled vibe.

The Fat Tuesday events spanned six days, with a focus on music, dressing up and good times.
